Implementation of the new legislation is not expected until mid 2009 at the first and the government still needs to craft regulations to the new anti-online gambling law.

Norwegian government approved a proposal to try to ban online poker

Norwegian Financial Services Association and many other prominent financial institutions in the country, opposed the adoption of the law, which is very similar to gambling illegal Internet Enforcement Act (UIEGA) adopted by the U.S. government in 2006.

The proposed ban, which also include operations - like the UIEGA, was justified by the Norwegian government said the law would help protect the players problem. The European Commission reported against the new law.

One of the top legal advisers of Norway and the anticipation that the bill will end at the European Court of Justice.

Some opponents of the new legislation, saying the country is simply trying to get the ban approved to ensure the safety of the state run lottery that Norsk Tipping has a monopoly in Norway.

Norsk Tipping offers a wide variety of lottery, sports and instant games in the Norwegian market and is owned by the Norwegian government (Storting) and managed by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs.

Since opening for business in 1948, Norsk Tipping have returned more than NOK 78 million (present value) for various purposes throughout the country.
